As I was reading 1 John 3 in my Bible yesterday, these are the words
and thoughts that came to my mind!
We human beings have the tendency to judge people and
their circumstances very quickly. If there is a homeless man on the street,
automatically some think he is a drug addict or alcoholic who drove himself into
debt and homelessness because he couldn’t control his addiction. He is looked
down upon as a tramp and a beggar. When a teenage girl is seen pushing a
baby in a pram, some are quick to think she is a loose gal who couldn’t keep
her legs closed. Oh and let’s not forget those who are unemployed and those in
receipt of benefits. They are lazy scroungers who sponge off the government
because they cannot be bothered to get a job. With all this narrow mindedness,
we are forgetting that we easily could be like them! We are no better than them. However, the difference is, is that most of us have received teaching, help and support to be where we are today.
But keeping what we have and know to ourselves is what many people are doing!
When was the last time we gave what we have or shared what we know to help the people
mentioned above? Don’t you think they have already received enough criticism
from others without us having a poke at them too? You may say, “I don’t say
anything to them, I don’t treat like them like that”, but the fact that we do
NOTHING to help them, is bad and we are doing what others are saying! Actions speak louder
than words.
Or maybe you have a neighbour who
is always stressed because she has to tackle housework, children and work. She is always shouting at her children, barges past people in the street and is very rude to the cashier or bus driver. One may think "oh this woman needs to calm down", but when
was the last time you offered to take care of her children whilst she does her
housework or has a few hours of rest? The youth that are always “on road”, when
was the last time you approached them to actually find out why they are always
on the street? Maybe they are having family problems and want to escape the
hell at home! There are many opportunities, help and support out there that we
know of but unfortunately others don’t have a clue about them. They are
ignorant to what is available for them and that their life can actually change.
What are you doing to share such things with others, even those close to you?
Many times we like to correct people with words, tell
them they need to fix up, how they should be like this and like that, but
sometimes we fail to do things to contribute to their change.
“But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need,
and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him? My little children let
us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth” 1 John 3:17-18
