When it comes to the Olympics, I am only ever interested in watching athletics, gymnastics and basketball. One person who caught my attention this year at the games was US Gymnast and Gold Medalist Gabrielle Douglas. I loved watching her and the entire US team, as they wowed us with their amazing talents.

While reading Gabrielle’s story and watching the clip below, something that her mom and "host" mom said caught my attention. "Family is not just blood relations but family is the people you connect to, draw close to and relate with"

The sacrifices this young gymnast made (one of them was moving thousands of miles away from her family to live with a host family and train with gymnastic coach Liang Chow), paid off and she achieved her dream at the age of 16 by winning two Gold medals at this years Olympic Games in London.  After her victory, she openly declared that God is the reason behind her success, acknowledging that He is the one who gave her the gift and talent that she has.

Although Gabrielle's blood family were not around her in person most of the time due to her moving to Iowa to train; she had other people around her supporting and guiding her. They've also made a positive impact in her success and life in general, am sure. Some of us will find that we are closer to or connect more with those who although they have no blood relation to us; share the same vision and goals as we do because we can add to each other’s lives through our personal experiences. They are an extended family that God has blessed us with and when our family is not around, they are the ones who correct us, inspire us, help us in our time of need, witness our growth and success as well as help us through our failures and hard moments.

I have a special family who I appreciate a lot and am grateful for. One day I will share them with you all.
